CITY SURF SERIES MOVED TO SUMMER 2021

The City Surf Series, has been forced to postpone the series for the second time due to the second COVID-19 outbreak.

The biggest, annual series of its kind amongst professional surfing events in the world has now been rescheduled for October 9, 2021 to November 14, 2021. The contests had originally been postponed to early April 2021. The series will now begin in Port Alfred, before heading to Nelson Mandela Bay, Vic Bay, Cape Town, Richards Bay, and head back to Nelson Mandela Bay for the final stop, the VW SA Open of Surfing.

Daniel Quinta, CEO of Accelerate Sport, said in a statement: “The current circumstances surrounding the uncertainty of the COVID-19 travel restrictions and mass gatherings have created an extremely tough environment for sports events. The health and safety of our surfers, staff, officials, and spectators are of paramount importance to us. We believe that this is the best preventative action we can take against the continued spread of COVID-19.”

2021 provisional dates and venues:

  • 8 – 10 October: Royal St. Andrews Hotel Port Alfred Classic
  • 15 – 17 October: Nelson Mandela Bay Pro
  • 22 – 24 October: George Vic Bay Classic
  • 28 – 31 October: Cape Town Pro
  • 5 – 7 November: Richards Bay Pro
  • 11 – 14 November: VW SA Open of Surfing

For the first time ever, a QS event will be run in the fabled waves of Richards Bay as part of the extended City Surf Series since its inception 2017. The Series shall be held in accordance with the Covid-19 Risk Mitigation strategy supplied by the government and by Surfing South Africa.

Accelerate Sport will continue to monitor the situation, with the priority being placed on the health and safety of athletes, officials, fans, and the community at large.
